The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has unveiled its new Mobile Application and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), aimed at improving road safety in Nigeria.
The digital platforms, launched in Abuja on Thursday, will offer essential services, including drivers’ license and number plate verification, eyewitness reports, speed detector verification, and emergency contact features.
In addition to these functions, the app also provides reminders for drivers’ licence and vehicle paper renewals, verification of driving schools, and information on traffic black spots.
These features are designed to help reduce road traffic crashes by providing real-time updates and alerts.
Speaking at the launch, George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, highlighted the importance of these digital tools in raising awareness among drivers and passengers about road safety risks.
Despite FRSC’s ongoing efforts to curb reckless driving, traffic crashes have resulted in 2,776 deaths and over 16,000 injuries between January and July 2024.
The FRSC’s digital initiative aligns with the federal government’s commitment to digital transformation, as part of the “Renewed Hope” agenda. Akume reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting these projects to ensure safer roads across Nigeria.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed noted that the app will allow users to report road safety issues, such as speeding and dangerous driving, and verify vehicle documents.
He expects these innovations to significantly reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.
Abiodun Derin Adesida, Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, encouraged the public to use the app effectively to foster a culture of safe driving.
Isa Ore, representing the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), reaffirmed the union’s commitment to complying with FRSC rules.
