Former FCT Minister Jeremiah Useni has passed away at 81. His leadership, compassion, and contributions to Nigeria’s progress are celebrated
Nigeria mourns the passing of former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd.), who died on Thursday, 23rd January 2025, following a prolonged illness.

General Useni, fondly known as “Jerry Boy,” was 81 and would have celebrated his 82nd birthday on 16th February.
His death was confirmed by family sources and announced in a statement issued by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation.
“General Useni’s life of service and commitment has left an indelible mark on our national security and political landscape,” the governor stated.
He highlighted the General’s contributions to peace and security, especially in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, praising his unwavering dedication to the country’s progress.
Born on 16th February 1943, Jeremiah Useni had a distinguished military and political career.
He served as Nigeria’s Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.
After retiring from the military, he joined politics, becoming Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later serving as a Senator for Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Governor Mutfwang celebrated Useni’s legacy, citing his compassion, generosity, and commitment to community welfare.
“His tireless efforts in promoting peace, security, and development will forever be remembered,” he said.
The governor extended his condolences to the late General’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and all those mourning his passing.
