The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) is investigating the tragic incident that led to the electrocution of two teenage siblings at Abule Oshun waterside in the Satellite Town area of Lagos State on Sunday.
The company has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and the entire community.
The teenagers, aged 13 and 15, lost their lives after stepping on an exposed electricity cable belonging to EKEDC. A resident named Afeez reported that the children were on their way to a nearby shop when they accidentally stepped on the live cable. Despite efforts to revive them, the siblings could not be saved.
Babatunde Lasaki, EKEDC General Manager of Corporate Communications, issued a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting the bereaved family during this difficult time. The statement read:
“Eko Electricity Distribution Company commiserates with the family of the deceased and the entire Abule Oshun Waterside community, Satellite Town over the sad and tragic passing of the two teenagers who came in contact with a snapped 0.415KVA LV line on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and everyone affected by this unfortunate incident.”
“In the wake of this, the EKEDC is fully committed to supporting the bereaved family during this difficult time. We are reaching out to the family to offer our deepest sympathies and provide the necessary assistance required to preserve their beloved memories. We are dedicated to standing by them and ensuring they have the support they need.”
Lasaki further stated that EKEDC is taking immediate and comprehensive actions to prevent future incidents and address community concerns. The company is conducting a franchise area-wide audit of all its infrastructure to ensure the highest safety standards are met. The audit will focus on identifying and rectifying potential hazards that could endanger lives and property within their service areas.
“Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our customers. We are committed to implementing necessary improvements and safeguards to prevent such an accident from happening again. We have also launched an investigation into the probable cause(s) of this unforeseen occurrence and ask for the community’s support and patience. We will update the public upon the completion of the investigation,” the statement added.
