The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently executed a significant operation, intercepting 21 trucks loaded with both food and non-food items.
These trucks were en route to various destinations including N’djamena in Chad Republic, Central African Republic, and Cameroon.
This operation, according to a statement from Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at EFCC, occurred on Tuesday. The sting operation was strategically carried out along major exit routes of Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads in Borno State.
Oyewale detailed that the intercepted trucks were found transporting items that were cleverly concealed, likely to avoid detection. The vigilance of the EFCC operatives was crucial in uncovering these concealed items. The waybills accompanying these trucks confirmed their destinations.
The apprehension of these trucks is seen as a significant step in addressing the escalating problem of food insecurity in the country, which is partly fuelled by the illegal activities of smugglers.
Individuals associated with the trucks are currently undergoing a thorough profiling process by the authorities. Following the completion of investigations, they are expected to face legal proceedings as appropriate.
Oyewale emphasized that this successful operation highlights the EFCC’s unwavering dedication to fighting economic crimes and safeguarding the nation’s borders. This commitment is vital for curbing illicit activities that not only harm the economy but also pose threats to national security.
