At exactly 12:20 pm, the Lagos state commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu , after meeting with some of his men, apologised to journalists and anyone who was brutalised and unlawfully arrested by any of his men during today’s memorial protest.
Prior to him apologising, he made brisk steps towards one of the huge Police vans parked at the Lekki tollgate. inside the van are #EndSARSmemorial protesters who have been picked and locked up. For identification purposes, he asked their identities before freeing them.
However, those who could not identify themselves remained locked up in the van, despite the uncomfortable temperature.
“We will investigate those still locked up in the van. ewe are taking them to the police station. Once we ascertain that they are harmless, we will let them go.”, Odumosu says this as other police officers surround him.
Regarding the arrest, the Police chief while apologising, stated that “This was done by Judases among us, by ignorant officers. This uniform I am wearing, you paid for it,” Odumosu said.
Moments after policemen dispersed protesters with tear gas canisters, the drive-through protest is reported to be over.
Earlier, a man who claimed to be an Uber driver was pepper-sprayed and dragged to the road as policemen were seen forcefully dragging him into the van.
