COVID-19: Liverpool proffered solution over Carabao Cup postponement, shutdown training ground

In response to Liverpool’s request for the Carabao Cup match to be postponed due to Covid, the EFL offered the Reds a solution. Liverpool are scheduled to take on Arsenal in the first leg of their semi-final tie on Thursday. However, the Reds have been plagued by the virus.

On Tuesday, the club’s training ground was closed due to the outbreak, which has seen Klopp, Allison, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip all test positive. The departures of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita for the Africa Cup of Nations have further depleted the Reds’ squad, leading to their request.

EFL rules stipulate that clubs may present their case for a postponement to league chiefs, but they are expected to do everything in their power to ensure matches continue as scheduled. Furthermore, matches must take place if teams are capable of calling upon a squad of 14 registered players.

On Tuesday night, Liverpool maintained in a statement that there was “no prospect of the current situation improving ahead of Thursday’s fixture”, which is why the Reds believe “it both prudent and reasonable to ask for the fixture to be rescheduled”,

Pep Lijnders, the assistant manager who was expected to lead a team against Arsenal, also tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, putting the game in serious doubt.

However, Danny Mills, a former England international who won the League Cup in 2004 with Middlesbrough, believes that the Reds should use their Under-23s squad to fulfil this fixture, just as they did when Klopp and his first-team squad took part in the 2019 Club World Cup.

“You can only call a game off if you’ve got so many cases of Covid. You have a squad of Under 23s that aren’t included in that 25-man squad,” he told talkSPORT.
