An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of two men in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for alleged illegal gun possession.

Magistrate A.S Odusanya, who did not take the suspects into custody on Tuesday, directed the police to refer the case to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

The police had charged a technician, Akeem Oyedele, 31, and a stylist, Friday Ereze, 21, with conspiracy and illegal gun possession.

Earlier, Prosecution Counsel Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi told the court that Oyedele, Ereze, and others at large committed the crime on October 22 at 10.40 p.m. in Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

He told the court that the men were also members of an illegal society known as the “Aiye’ confraternity.”

He went on to say that they were armed with dangerous weapons with the intent to commit a felony, specifically robbery.

When questioned, Ajayi stated that they were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for why they were in possession of dangerous weapons.

He claimed that the offence violated sections 42 and 330 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.

Section 42 imposes a three-year prison sentence for belonging to an unlawful society, while Section 330 imposes a seven-year sentence for unlawful gun possession.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned until February 9, 2022, for DPP advice.
