Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday summoned the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Akibu, Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the university’s Senate and other top officials.
The summon was due to the recent allegations of extortion and certificate racketeering levelled against the school.
According to the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa the story could be suspicious and not trustworthy because it tends to blackmail and agreed that concerned officials should be invited to present facts to safeguard the institution’s reputation.
He said: “I agree that the committee should invite those to be invited to establish facts about the allegation, but we must not because of that destroy our institution’s reputation. If anyone is found wanting, such a person should be sanctioned.”
Owolabi Ajani, who moved the motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance,’ urged his colleagues that the House needed to invite the commissioner, the VC, and others to investigate the accusation.
He stated that LASU has maintained a high level of integrity over the year and this must be sustained.
While Sa’ad Olumoh advocated for the investigation to include people from the institution’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit, Desmond Elliot and Ladi Ajomale agreed that the accusation should be probed.
Ajani noted that LASU had maintained a high integrity over the years “and this must be sustained.”
