The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called for equitable access to the justice system and a comprehensive review of legal processes to better serve Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
The programme person for the project, Christiana Njoku made the call in Lagos at a press conference saying access to justice is one of the seventeen sustainable development goals of the United Nations which aimed at promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
She said access to justice for PWD ensures individuals can seek legal remedies and participate fully in legal processes, for persons with disabilities, access to justice is crucial as it empowers them to assert their rights.
Justice is essential for equal protection for people living with disabilities. “Several challenges and barriers persist for people living with disabilities in accessing justice.
There are still significant gaps and obstacles that hinder their ability to fully participate in legal proceedings. Also, many justice facilities lack adequate physical accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, accessible parking spaces, restrooms and directional signs.
“The physical infrastructure barriers prevent people living with disabilities, particularly those with mobility impairments from entering and navigating these spaces independently.
