The Police in Cameroon have opened an investigation into the country’s Football Federation President, Samuel Eto’o for match-fixing claims.

The former Barcelona striker is alleged to have played a key role in getting Cameroonian football club Victoria United promoted to the first division.

According to a recent audio leak, the 42-year-old was a part of a sizable group that was fixing matches in Cameroon’s second division.

The Cameroonian police are reportedly investigating a number of important witnesses connected to the fixing organization, according to a letter obtained by The Guardian.

In the recording that was transcribed by the newspaper, Eto’o was heard saying: “Don’t worry, we will give you your three points and we will suspend the referee. Opopo [Victoria’s nickname] must go up to the first division. This is our goal. This is our federation. Victoria United will go up.”

Meanwhile, Eto’o had since denied all allegations, claiming he was speaking to a friend who invests in football and desires to have his team rank among the best in Cameroon.

He further said he had simply reassured him by stating that he would have done everything in his power to prevent any refereeing errors against him.
