The Lagos State Government has warned that anyone constructing buildings without approval will risk prosecution for infringement of the law and the structure removed.

This warning was issued by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide during a routine monitoring of the built environment along the Lekki/Ajah corridor on Wednesday.

The commissioner ordered the sealing and partial removal of some contravening constructions in various locations along the axis, as well as a severe warning to owners/developers of all buildings under the powerline to depart within two weeks.

He said no structure is permitted under the powerline, which should only allow for open displays of goods and services.

Lamenting the widespread contempt for physical planning regulations across the state, he declared that there would be no sacred cows in applying the law to the advantage of a liveable and sustainable built environment.

He urged property owners and developers to obtain planning permits before embarking on construction and keep to the dictates of their approvals to avoid the wrath of the law.

The commissioner also assessed the clearing of structures on the drainage alignment in Ikota Villa Estate by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Olumide said obtaining approval before erecting structures and buildings in line with the granted approval is important as the planning permit is critical to environmental sustainability and national security.
