AFCON 2025 preliminary round draw holds today

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to conduct the preliminary draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations today.

This event will take place at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, as confirmed by a statement from the organization’s Communication Department.

The announcement on CAF’s official website indicated that the draw for the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, Morocco 2025 preliminary round, is scheduled for Tuesday, following the conclusion of the 34th edition of the competition.

The event is set to commence at 14h00 local time (12h00 GMT).

“The preliminary round will include the eight lowest-ranked teams according to the FIFA ranking: Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini. The matches will be played on a home and away basis during the FIFA Window of March 18 to March 26. The four preliminary round winners will join the 44 exempted teams for the group stage,” the statement detailed.

The recent 2023 AFCON tournament, hosted by Côte d’Ivoire, concluded with the host team, the Elephants, emerging victorious.

They clinched the title by defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria with a scoreline of 2-1 in the final, adding to the anticipation and excitement for the upcoming 2025 tournament in Morocco.
