On October 14, 2021, World Sight Day was celebrated across the globe, with the theme; “Love your eyes”. Using a PC is one of the major causes of eye problems and with the COVID-19 induced lockdown many have turned to their laptops to work, school and connect with the outside world, leading to more eye problems.

There are ways you can help your eyes even if you’d always be staring at a computer screen 24/7. Today let’s share with you ways you can improve your sight naturally.

Feed your eyes

Your eyes are a key proponent of the body, so when you eat for your skin, belly, and bones, you should also eat for your eyes too. Vitamin A, C and E have antioxidants that can prevent macular degeneration, and let’s not forget zinc and copper. Incorporating food that contains these vitamins and minerals should be a priority if you want an improved vision.
Foods, fruits and veggies like carrot, red peppers, broccoli, spinach, fish, flaxseed, sweet potato, eggs, citrus, etc are good sources of these vital nutrients.

Exercise your eyes

Yes! I know it sounds strange, but your body isn’t the only one with muscles, the eyes also have some muscles and they need exercise to stay in good shape. Eye exercises are best done in the morning and before going to bed at night. The exercises;
Warm your palms and place them on your eyes for five seconds, do this three times.
Roll your eyes, not at that annoying person though. Looking up in circles for ten times in clockwise and anticlockwise.
For a sharp focus, hold out any object at arm’s length, focus on it, move the object closer while focusing on it, to about 15 cm from your nose. Do this ten times.

Consistency is required for visible results.

Take carotenoids supplements

We spoke about feeding your eyes earlier, sometimes you may not get the full nutrients needed for a clearer vision, which is why medical personnel encourage the use of supplements. These carotenoids found in the retina; lutein and zeaxanthin can improve pigment density and help absorb ultraviolet and blue light in the eyes.

Exercise and balance your sugar level

Maintaining a healthy weight can help your vision, not just your heart or abdomen. Health conditions like type 2 diabetes common in overweight people can damage the blood vessels in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy causes the eye blood vessels to leak blood and fluid into the eye.
Regular blood sugar checkup and consistent exercising can help keep you in shape and keep type 2 diabetes away from you.

Manage chronic health problems

Diabetes isn’t the only disease that can affect your vision. High blood pressure, measles, Lyme disease, liver disease, malnutrition, and sickle cell disease can affect the eyes, this is because they are linked to chronic inflammation which can affect any part of the body.

Inflammation to the optic nerve can lead to a complete loss of vision. Some of these diseases can be prevented while some cannot. However, healthy habits can be used to manage some of the health challenges that cannot be prevented.

Protect your eyes

We are gradually moving into the harmattan season, it will be windy and dusty, you may want to start investing in good sunglasses.
Good sunglasses are not only a fashion statement, they can also block out 99 to 100% UVA and UVB radiation from sunlight.
And lest I forget, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, snapback or face cap can also protect your eyes from sun damage.

The 20-20-20 Rule

Heard of this rule? If you haven’t, I’ll explain, you know how busy you are all day in front of your PC or on tour phone, well, medical experts have said to avoid the strain from long stare on your phone or computer, every 20 minutes, stare at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Remember, getting a regular eye checkup is very important for a healthy vision. In line with doing that, help your eyes today by feeding them, exercising them, boosting their capacity with supplements, keeping your body in good shape, eating healthy, wearing good sunglasses, and following the 20-20-20 rule.
