14-year-old from Plateau State wins Lagos Women Run

A 14-year-old runner from Plateau State, Maisaje Vera-Yohanna has emerged winner of the 7th edition of the Lagos Women Run with a time of 29.38.72.

The stellar performance of the 10km Run began at Tafawa Balewa Square and ended at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan at the weekend.

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku described the 7th Edition of the Lagos Women Run as a platform designed to develop the culture of a healthy lifestyle for women.

He noted that over the years, the event has attracted an increased number of women participation.

He explained that the message of the annual run is gradually spreading among women, adding that the Marathon is getting bigger while the organisation is getting better by the year.

Aiyepeku stated that women had been marginalised in the scheme of things for a long time, but the State Government is determined to rectify the situation by encouraging more women’s participation in sports through its various policies and programmes.

In his remarks, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Gafaar, said this year’s marathon has shown that women are taking full advantage of the sporting opportunities and are determined to give their best at the subsequent marathons.

Lagos State’s Haruna Hauwawu came second as she also broke the half-hour mark with a finish time of 29.27.59 while Delta State’s Charity Agofure was third with a time of 30.13.17.
